In Goodhue and Dakota counties, zebra mussels have been verified.

It has been determined that the species in question exists in Dakota and Goodhue counties.

Zebra mussels were confirmed to have been discovered in Goodhue and Dakota counties' Lake Byllesby, which is close to Cannon Falls, by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

According to DNR, zebra mussels have been seen in the region previously. Staff from the DNR discovered one mature zebra mussel in August 2023, but surveys conducted at the time revealed no more or signs of reproduction.

Nonetheless, four zebra mussel larvae were found in this year's water samples, suggesting that the lake had undergone reproducing.

  • The DNR would like to remind people that no matter where invasive species are found, they must abide by the following rules to stop their spread:
  • Clean trailers, boats, and equipment to get rid of aquatic vegetation and illegal exotic species.
  • During transit, remove all water and leave the drain plugs out.
  •  Throw away any unwanted bait in the garbage. Never let plants, bait, or aquarium animals   escape into Minnesota waters.
  • Before transferring docks, lifts, and rafts from one body of water to a different one, they must dry for 21 days.

People should get in touch with a Minnesota DNR aquatic invasive species specialist if they believe they have discovered an invasive species that has yet to be identified to be in the bodies of water.
